| The Westmoreland County Historical Society, the official historical society for the county, is an educational organization that manages historical resources in order to educate a large and diverse audience about the more than 225 year history of Westmoreland County in ways that offer people connections to the past, an understanding of the present, and guidance for the future.
Founded in 1908, the Historical Society is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation. The Society maintains a 700,000 item archival collection; the 5000-volume Calvin E. Pollins Memorial Library for local history and genealogical research; a 3,500 item curatorial collection; administers Historic Hanna's Town and manages over one-million artifacts from Hanna's Town archaeological site.
Membership is open to anyone who wishes to support the mission and work of the Society.
In addition to sponsoring a wide variety of public programs, the Historical Society publishes a journal of history, Westmoreland History, three times a year and a quarterly newsletter, Westmoreland Chronicle.
The Society is governed by a policy-making Board of Directors. A full-time Executive Director is responsible for the day-today operation of the Society. The Society's work is carried out by a full-time Education Coordinator, a library assistant, seasonal employees, and volunteers.
As the official county historical society, we are supported in part by grants from the Westmoreland County Commissioners and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
