Site Nineteen – Braddock’s Last Encampment
|
|
Continue along the Clay Pike Road, which becomes Manus Road and then Lincoln Way for 5.6 miles. As the British moved between high ridges, they took extra precautions to avoid ambush. Where Lincoln crosses Foster was the site of Braddock’s Last Encampment the night of July 8-9, 1755. The historical marker originally at the site has been relocated to the White Oak Borough Swimming Pool. To see it, continue on Lincoln Way one block and turn right on State Street for 0.4 mile to Victoria then right again. The marker is at the end of the parking lot embedded in a stone. At this encampment George Washington, who had been seriously ill, rejoined the army as it prepared for the final thrust towards Fort Duquesne. |
