Site Seventeen – Monacatootha’s Camp

Turn around and retrace your route 0.3-mile to Wagner Road and Turn left.  Proceed 1.0 mile to Brown Town Road and turn left for 1.1 miles.  Bear left on Mill Street 0.2 mile to the intersection with Main Street in Madison.

Turn right on Main Street and proceed 0.3 mile through Madison to a stop sign.  Follow Rte. 136 to the right for 1.2 miles.  After about 0.7 mile, you will see on your left in the distance a power line that follows approximately Braddock’s route.

When you reach the “T” intersection, turn left on unmarked Evanston Road.  (Rte. 136 goes right at this point.)  Proceed 0.7 mile and then turn right on Buffalo Road for 0.8 mile.  The road is quite bumpy and poorly paved.  Buffalo Road becomes Limerick Road after crossing over the Wendell-Herminie Road.  Bear right onto Wallace Run Road for 1.0 mile and then turn right on unmarked Howell Lane, which is just past an old dam.  Drive 0.2 mile.  On your right, there is an historical marker for Monacatootha’s Camp where Braddock’s army spent the night of July 6-7, 1755.  The marker is on private property, but can easily be read from the road.

July 6 had been filled with drama.  French and Indian forces had twice attacked the British column, and the son of Monacatootha, the leader of the Indians helping Braddock, had been killed by “friendly fire.”  The young man was buried at this site with military honors.
